Fuck you, Vampire Weekend

Everyone's been all excited about you for a while now and I just finally got around to giving you a spin. By your name I figured you'd be a quirkier version of I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness, which could be great.

But no, you had to be an afro-pop influenced version of Architecture in Helsinki with a reasonable amount of band members. Seriously, who's influenced by afro-pop, all plinky and cheerful and shit?

Oh, right

  1. FYI, there's been lots of bands jumping on the African/THeads thing these past 18 months. Some of it actually doesn't suck; though someone wouldn't know that if they were mainly gauging off of VW.

  2. On second thought, I was just given an assignment of giving a Music Year In Review/Best Of submission, and I have to conclude that "The Flood Of Indie Artists Plundering 'Folksy' World Music For Lack Of Other/Any Ideas" has to be on my list one of main "cons" of the year. And this year it was Africa's honor to get raped (yet again), with the Pfork crowd collectively competing for Robert Mugabe's claim to the Bastard Of The Year award.

And btw: Foals totally don't rank in that category. To people who don't know shit about African music, the guitar stuff might sound like "African music." But, to my ears, they're largely doing something else.
